Morgan Funeral Chapel Obituaries

Morgan Y. Himmelstein

He was the beloved husband of the late Arline (Kagan) Himmelstein. Born in Lebanon, CT, Morgan was the son of the late Louis and Dora (Zatornesky) Himmelstein. He grew up on the Himmelstein Dairy Farm in Lebanon and graduated from UCONN with a BA and Masters in Education. Morgan proudly served in WWII with the 384th Bomb Group stationed in Grafton Underwood, England. Upon returning from the war, he continued to work on the farm and commenced a long and fulfilling career as a teacher in the Hartford Public Schools ? at the Annie Fisher School, the Mark Twain School and the Lewis Fox Middle School. He married Arline on July 3, 1955 and lived in West Hartford until his passing. He was a founding member and a former Post Commander of the American Legion Post 180 in Lebanon, as well as a dedicated member of the Hartford Chapter of the Jewish Veterans of Foreign Wars. As President of the Greater Hartford People to People Council, in 1967 he led a trip to Hartford's Sister City, Thessaloniki, Greece. Passionate about teaching and agriculture, Morgan was awarded the Hartford Public School's "Conservation Teacher of the Year Award" in 1976. Morgan is survived by his three daughters, Tara Milne and her husband, John of New York, NY, Dr. Lisa Himmelstein and her husband, Philip Bogdan, of Alexandria, VA and Dr. Amy Himmelstein and her husband, Robert Fabricant of West Hartford, CT; his beloved grandchildren, Jack Bogdan and his fiancée Brooklyn Short, Carol Fabricant and Matthew Fabricant; his brothers and sisters-in-laws Eugene and Elaine Kagan and Joseph and Irma Schachter, and many nieces and nephews. He also leaves his friend, companion and "best buddy" Prince Kyei ? who enabled Morgan to live the last 3 ½ years of his life full of joy, compassion and the ability to "grow old" with dignity. In addition to his wife and parents, he was predeceased by his sister Zelda Himmelstein, brothers Benjamin and Meyer Himmelstein and his sisters-in-laws Eva Himmelstein and Carol Schachter. Funeral services will take place at 1:30 PM... (Hartford Courant)
